University of Applied Science and Technology (UAST)
Background
The University of Applied Science and Technology (UAST) was established in 1992 with the aim of educating specialized manpower needed for the economic, social, and industrial sectors of Iran. Since its establishment, the UAST has sought to upgrade the technical and scientific knowledge of job holders, especially those who are working as low-skilled workers in different sectors of the economy.
Prior to the establishment of the UAST, different institutions, organizations, ministries, and manufacturing companies held various training courses in order to educate their employees. However, most such courses did not offer official certificates. Also, the training programs and curricula were not always standard; competition was low; and many programs and courses were not comprehensive enough. Added to these were the high costs and low efficiency of the programs.
Another problem with the mentioned type of training and education was the wide gap between the training courses and the real requirements of the related industries. It was against this backdrop that the UAST' was established to create a sense of unity and conformity in Technical and Vocational Education at post-high school level. At the same time, the main goal of UAST was to train skilled manpower needed for the successful implementation of national development plans that would contribute to the socio-economic prosperity of the country.
At some UAST branches, training courses and classes are held in the vicinity of the related industrial and economic installation and experts of the industry contribute to the courses. In other words, the UAST is a Technical / Vocational University in which the graduates, after finishing their theoretical and practical degrees, can immediately assume responsibility in the capacity of an educated and skilled person in their respective fields of study.
